We often feel these two topics cause too many issues and don't wish to have them on our sites. I have given this a lot of thought and have come to the conclusion it's not the topics... but the people... causing the issues.
It's not even just politics and religion... it's more like all kinds of life styles and choices that get people to fighting, insulting and being rude. Mostly, I've noticed if people have a strong feeling of being right, they don't believe anyone else with different ideas, views or ways should be considered and many times will insult or be nasty.
So... I'm thinking it's more about how people handle their upsets and disagreements.... how we all choose to treat others. Every last one of us has the option to "let it go" and not fall into being rude, nasty and unkind.

Unfortunately, there are far too many who can't agree to disagree and move on.
I have seen that so many times on all sorts of social media platforms and sites commenting sections, not just Disqus
.
Few know what a debate means. It isn't "I am right and you are wrong and I am not shifting". It's about listening to the other person, thinking about what they say, and then giving your reasoned thoughts on it.
Even if you still disagree, there is no need for insults, abuse or targeted harassment over it.

And yes, even the most innocent of topics can cause fighting if you get the wrong people involved.
It surprises me sometimes what people CAN argue about.

Well put! One that surprises me is football/sports. I have seen and heard some people who think you're an enemy if you don't like the same team!
