Mary Geneva "Mamie" Eisenhower... First lady of the U.S. from 1953 to 1961 as wife to president Dwight D. Eisenhower.
My understanding is this fudge recipe became popular with Mamie Eisenhower. I do believe it's because Mamie made it often enough that others associated it with her.
So, I gave it a go and it's good, but very rich!
I made a few changes in the recipe or at least to what others posted in their reviews. I got the idea most used semi-sweet chocolate chips while I used a baking chocolate bar. I didn't put the chocolate and other ingredients in a bowl... just threw them in the chocolate mixture when it was off the burner. lol
It turned out great, in my humble opinion. :)
This recipe makes quite a bit of fudge!
Mamie Eisenhower's Million Dollar Fudge
Ingredients
4 1/2 cups sugar
Pinch salt
2 tablespoons butter
1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
2 cups coarsely chopped pecans
1 pint (1 jar) marshmallow cream (2 Cups)
12 ounces semisweet chocolate
12 ounces German's sweet chocolate
Directions
In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, bring the sugar, salt, butter and evaporated milk to a boil. Boil for 6 minutes.
Meanwhile, place the pecans, marshmallow fluff and chocolate in a large bowl. Pour the boiled syrup over the chocolate mixture. Beat until chocolate is all melted.
Spray a 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 by 1-inch jelly-roll pan with a nonstick cooking spray and pour fudge into pan. Let harden at room temperature before cutting into 1-inch squares (can be placed in the refrigerator or freezer to speed hardening process).
